I speak both mandarin and cantonese. I agree that their language structure is different even though the character usage is rather similar for most words.
I personally find it easier learning Mandarin 1st then Cantonese.
I find both important to preserve our chinese culture and am teaching both to my toddlers at the moment.

Kenneth,
This is precisely what this post is about: how to learn Mandarin or Cantonese, given that you know the other language.

The misconception is that just because you speak Cantonese/Mandarin it's pretty easy to learn the other. This is not necessarily true. In the end it does come down to motivation, lots of practice and not being afraid to make mistakes.

I later learned that the most effective way is to listen to a lot of Mandarin content, and let the sounds sink into my mind along with the associated context. One day, I will subconsciously recall the sound when it is needed -
What links , not just the home page, did you listen to? I am looking for Bejing Mandarin

I think Cantonese is like a different language, but have the same character as the Mandarin. Even though I do agree Cantonese sounds a little better and more interesting, but from a practical angle, I do think learning Mandarin maybe a better choice. If you want to learn Mandarin, maybe a good choicethis site .
